NDP Question Period, December 8: O’Leary Calls on Gov to Sell off U.S. Alcohol and Donate Revenue

Here is the question that MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, Sheilagh O’Leary, would have asked in Question Period today:

“Speaker, other provinces, including Manitoba and Nova Scotia, have made the decision to sell off U.S. alcohol that was left on shelves in response to tariffs and to use the revenue generated to support charities.”

“Winter is here, and many in our province are struggling to make ends meet. During this holiday season, people are anxious, wondering if they will be able to put food on the table, and some are even worried about not having a roof over their head.”

“In this province, an estimated $3.2 million in revenue could be raised from selling U.S. alcohol products. The NLC says that any decision regarding the U.S. stock is within the government’s purview.”

“Given that this government has refused to open the House of Assembly to bring cost-of-living relief to people during the winter, I ask the Premier: Will your government do what is right and follow in the footsteps of Manitoba and Nova Scotia by selling off U.S. alcohol products and donating the proceeds to charities and non-profit organizations across the province to help them support Newfoundlanders and Labradorians this winter?”
