NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) will be attending the townhall in Small Point, Broad Cove. This evening is being held ahead of the one year anniversary of the devastating Kingston wildfire that swept through Conception Bay North, leaving residents worried about their homes, their loved ones, and what the future will hold.
Dinn says that attending this event is important to not only show support for the residents of Conception Bay North, but to celebrate the role the community has played in overcoming such a tragedy.
“There are a lot of emotions that come up when thinking back to the devastating wildfires that swept through our province last year. I could never truly put myself in the shoes of the residents who were forced to evacuate for weeks, waiting to learn what they would be returning home to,” said Dinn. “But I knew I wanted to help. My family and I went out to lend a hand in any way we could. Even with the uncertainty and anxiety that weighed so heavily, so many volunteers made sure no one faced it alone.”
“In the face of disaster, I witnessed the very best of Newfoundland and Labrador. I saw communities come together, neighbours supporting neighbours, and people opening their doors to those who had lost so much. I saw neighbouring communities welcome evacuees with compassion, providing food, shelter, and comfort during an incredibly difficult time. I saw volunteers travel from across the province, ready to help strangers simply because they needed it. Amid the devastation, there was resilience, generosity, and hope. The people of Conception Bay North showed incredible strength, and I believe that strength continues to grow every single day.”
“Then, there are our first responders, firefighters, and the countless workers and volunteers who selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to protect residents and communities. Words can never fully express our gratitude for everything they do to keep people safe across this province.
“This may mark the one-year anniversary of a devastating and overwhelming wildfire, but it is also a reminder of the strength and compassion that emerged in its aftermath. Neighbours stood by one another, communities came together, and people stepped up to help however they could. That is something we can all be proud of and celebrate.”
