With 19 men and 21 women, the Newfoundland and Labrador NDP becomes the first slate in the province to have a majority of women running.
The last time the Newfoundland and Labrador NDP had a full slate of candidates was 2015.
Until now.
NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn announces that his party has a full slate of candidates with 40 New Democrats on the ballot to give people the true choice for change. Not only does the full slate have gender parity, but for the first time in the province’s history, the slate showcases a majority of women on the ballot.
“This campaign is making history in Newfoundland and Labrador,” says Dinn. “Not only do we have a full slate of New Democrat candidates – one in each district giving people the choice to vote for change – but we also have 21 women on the ballot, making provincial history.”
Dinn also points out that on top of the majority women slate, history is being made in other ways with the NDP candidate for Mount Scio Laurabel Mba.
“Laurabel Mba, our strong candidate for Mount Scio, is the first Black person in the history of this province on the ballot for provincial politics,” Dinn said. “We are not only proud of her for putting herself forward to run as a New Democrat, but I believe it is important that our slate of candidates reflects the people and communities of our province. She is going to bring an important voice to the House of Assembly, bringing forward even more insight on how we continue to grow and build our province.”
