As the increasing cost of food continues to loom over the dinner table in many homes across this province, NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) is hosting a panel discussion on how food insecurity impacts Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and what we can do to address it.
Moderated by Sharron Callahan, Executive Director at NL Public Sector Pensioners Association, the panel discussion will bring together experts spanning from food production, food bank usage, and more. Panelists include representatives from Food Producers Forum, Single Parents Association NL, Bridges to Hope, and Food First NL.
“Over the past few years, the cost of food has become a serious issue for people across the province, but certainly in my district. When we talk about access to affordable, health food, we talk about healthcare and ensuring residents are able to stay well and out of our healthcare system. We talk about ensuring children aren’t hungry and can focus in the classroom. We talk about dignity for folks to be able to feed themselves and their families,” said Dinn.
“In the Fall, the NDP will be presenting our private members resolution on addressing food insecurity, which includes calling for research into public grocery stores, and investment in local food production and distribution. But to strengthen food security, we knew we had to have a conversation that brought local experts together to discuss the issues on the ground, along with solutions they have been pushing for,” said Dinn. “To create meaningful change, we must include those who are already passionate and dedicated to finding these solutions to ensure Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are not going hungry. I look forward to the conversation.”
