Statement from NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn on International Pride Month

NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) issued the following statement marking the start of International Pride Month.

“Each year, Pride Month offers an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Around the world, Pride in June recognizes the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a defining moment in the ongoing fight for equality and human rights. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, Pride celebrations take place throughout July and across the summer in communities throughout our province.

“The NL NDP stands proudly and firmly alongside the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Pride is a celebration of love, identity, and belonging, but it is also a reminder that the work toward equality and safety is far from over.

“In recent years, we have seen a troubling rise in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ rhetoric, including increasing attacks targeting transgender people and queer youth. Whether it comes from political movements elsewhere or from voices here at home, hate and discrimination cannot be allowed to take root in our communities. Everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected for who they are.

“We all have a responsibility to build a province where people can live openly and authentically without fear. That means supporting inclusive schools, protecting human rights, and ensuring our public spaces and institutions are welcoming to all.

“Pride is more than a celebration. It is also an act of visibility, solidarity, and hope. It is about uplifting our neighbours, friends, family members, and coworkers, and recognizing that diversity makes our communities stronger, kinder, and more vibrant.

“As Pride flags are raised across Newfoundland and Labrador this summer, the NL NDP celebrates the progress achieved through decades of advocacy and courage by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We remain committed to standing with you and continuing the work toward a future built on equality, dignity, inclusion, and freedom from hate.”
