The Fall sitting of the House of Assembly begins next week. NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) says the NDP Caucus will continue to raise the voices of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians calling for solutions on housing, health care, and the affordability crisis.
“Across the province, people are finding it harder to afford to live. Over three quarters of people in our province are living paycheck to paycheck,” said Dinn. “We lead the country in longest wait times for mental health counselling. There are still many Family Care Teams waiting to be fully staffed and operating. People need reassurance that government understands the reality that people are facing, but I don’t think they do.
“We have solutions. We will continue to point to our NL NDP Housing Plan to advocate for more community and non-market housing. We will continue to advocate for health care workers who need a strong human resources plan to reduce burn out. We will continue to call for government to invest into our post-secondary students by lowering tuition, bringing back the tuition freeze, and paying for all work terms,” said Dinn. “If there are levers we can pull, we are going to pull them.”
The NDP will also introduce a Private Members Resolution this sitting, calling for government to remove the provincial HST off all forms of home heating. Dinn says this would help many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as the cost of living crisis continues to add strain.
“The removal of the provincial HST off home heating is not a new idea and has been done before in this province. This is a simple motion that we except all members to support,” said Dinn. “Whether you heat your home with oil, or have electric heating, you will feel some relief from the rising cost of heat. Winter is coming, and we must do everything we can do help people in the province.
“I am looking forward to continuing the fight in pushing for measures that will fundamentally help people across our province.”
