NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) was uninspired by Budget 2025-2026, saying it shows just how out of touch the Liberals are with the province and what people are really going through.
In a time when bold, brave measures are needed to ensure people are protected and the province is prepared to brace the ever-changing global climate, Dinn says the Liberals refused to do anything to bring people's heads above water.
“It’s beyond disappointing to see how void of any real action this budget is to actually help people afford to live. I had hoped government would bring forward some new measures to help the cost of living, but there is nothing,” Dinn said. “Removing the HST from all forms of home heating is something that would help so many people across our province, but they don’t have the will to take bold action.
“To see that government decided to cut $23 million from the NL Housing Corporation budget, in a time where non-market, community-based housing is desperately needed for deeply affordable housing to put a roof over people's heads, is beyond frustrating.”
Dinn says there are many measures government could have taken to help people, some of which cost no money to government.
“I was disappointed but not surprised to see that government continues to refuse to work with the federal government to sign on to the Pharmacare program. This program would bring millions into this province to help people afford medications. The Minister says they don’t want to lose the provincial plan, but working with the federal government would allow us to build on that program so more people can avail of it. It’s an excuse, something that this government is full of.
“We are living through unprecedented times. It’s not the time for status quo measures, or for government to sit on their hands. People need leadership, they need innovation and out of the box ideas to bring us all above water. This government is tired, and people are only hurting more for it.”
