Government Continues to be Reactive, Not Proactive with Health Care

For Immediate Release

October 25, 2024

NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) is wondering when government will stop being reactive and start being proactive by having a plan. This comes after the Minister of Health, John Hogan, announced that more beds must be added to the new Western Memorial Hospital.

After news broke that the brand new hospital was already at capacity, government reacted and announced the addition of 15 more beds. Dinn says this is just another example of government announcing new builds without focusing on a plan to recruit and retain health care workers.

“The calling card for this Liberal government is announcing new builds with private companies. Then when its time for these builds to open, issues are already piling up,” said Dinn. “We continue to hear announcements, yet when it comes down to the delivery of service, it only adds more stress and reactive actions.”

Dinn says government seems to have blinders on when looking at the health care system and are unable to focus on the root problem.

“I’ve been meeting with unions and workers since being elected, and the message is clear. We need a human resources plan for health care workers,” said Dinn. “Why are we still making nurses work overtime with no ability to take time off to spend with family? Why are doctors still calling for government to address the amount of admin and paperwork tasks that take time away from seeing patients? I question if government really listens.

“I think about the workers who hear this announcement and wonder what supports will be in place to help with their added workload.”

“New builds are great, but when is this government going to be proactive and not wait for more crises to arise for them to put a band-aid over?”
