Dinn Writes Education Minister to Define EAL Supports

For Immediate Release

October 2, 2024

NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) is questioning the English as an Additional Language (EAL) supports available through the Department of Education for students throughout the province.

After speaking to itinerants within the Department of Education, Dinn wrote the Minister today to ask questions concerning EAL workers, including funding available for EAL supports and their role within schools.

“EAL supports in schools are crucial to ensure students across the province receive the proper education,” said Dinn. “As a former teacher myself, I know firsthand the importance of having EAL workers available to go to for support and resources for students whose first language is not English.”

The following questions were asking to the Interim Minister:

  1. Since bringing the NLESD under the Department of Education, has there been a change in how EAL workers in schools are operating?

  2. Are all EAL positions filled within the Department of Education? If not, how many EAL positions are unfilled?

  3. Are there any changes to the Literacy Enrichment and Academic Readiness for Newcomers (LEARN) program since the NLESD was brought into the Department of Education?

  4. Under what budget line does EAL workers fall? Why do EAL supports not have their own budget line?

  5. What is the Department of Education doing to survey schools throughout the province to determine what EAL resources are needed?

“As we continue to welcome newcomers into our province, recruiting doctors and nurses from overseas, or bringing in refugees from war town countries, we must ensure that children who are attending our schools, and the workers who provide those resources, have the supports they need.”
