For Immediate Release
September 27, 2024
NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn made the following statement today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:
“Monday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we reflect on Truth and Reconciliation, on the painful history endured by Indigenous communities across the country, including the Mi’kmaq, Innu and Inuit here in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Most importantly, we must make sure that reflection is followed by action to promote reconciliation and to right the generations of wrongs against Indigenous peoples. It is a day to reflect on the long path ahead of us.
We call on the provincial government to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). We must commit to building an inclusive and equitable future for all.
We continue to call on the federal and provincial governments to fully carry out the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action along with the recommendations from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
As Justice Murray Sinclair so poignantly stated, “We have described for you a mountain. We have shown you the path to the top. We call upon you to do the climbing.”
Newfoundland and Labrador must climb the path to the top.”
Dinn will be attending the Rally for Reconciliation on Monday from 2:00 pm to 3:00pm at the Colonial Building to support the Indigenous community and the 42 Calls for Change.
