NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) criticized government inaction on the rising cost of electricity. Bills are causing upset and adding stress to people across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dinn questioned government in today about its refusal to take concrete action to help keep money in people’s pockets while ensuring people can afford to stay warm.
“When my colleague asked yesterday about the impact of the rising cost of electricity on people across the province, the Minister responded that government is removing the gas tax,” Dinn said. “Not everyone drives a car. People are angry and afraid, and wondering why this government continues to leave them out in the cold.”
The New Democratic Caucus continues to urge government to remove the provincial portion of HST from all forms of home heating, including electricity, oil, and even wood. Dinn points out that the federal GST holiday showed positive economic outcomes, People had more money to put back into the local economy, and inflation actually lowered.
Dinn says removing the HST from all forms of home heating would be direct and immediate relief to people across the province and says government’s inaction is unacceptable. Dinn asked the Minister, “Why does this government continue to refuse to help people stay warm in the winter?”
