NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) says that while Premier Andrew Furey is appearing on major news outlets like CNN to discuss tariffs, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are left wondering why they are not hearing directly from him at home.

Dinn is raising concerns about the lack of clear communication from the Premier on tariff action. He says the Premier has a responsibility to be transparent with the public about what he is doing to address the threat of tariffs.

“I’ve written the Premier several times over the past three months regarding tariffs and the province’s action plan, yet I’ve received no reply. I’m still waiting for a conversation about how we can work together to protect everyday people,” said Dinn. “Creating a task force and bringing stakeholders to the table was a good first step, but what has happened since? Where are the updates?

“Is the Premier engaging with other provinces to strengthen EI so workers aren’t left behind? I’ve urged him to work with community groups, along with unions and business leaders, to ensure people in this province are as protected as possible from the fallout of tariffs. Is he doing that? And what is he doing to address the rising cost of living, something people are already struggling with? The public deserves to be part of this conversation.”

Dinn says Furey is still the Premier, and it is his responsibility to speak to the people of this province about what he is doing, who he is meeting, and what specific action he and his government are taking to prepare people for tariffs. He says that we may be fine for now, but Trump’s logic can change with the wind.

“I continue to hope for a discussion with the Premier on tariffs, but it appears increasingly unlikely.”
