“My rent keeps going up. I’m on the seniors benefit and my income does not increase to meet the rent increases. I’m afraid of losing my housing.” – A constituent in St. John’s Centre.
The cost of living continues to burden many people. This is why NL NDP Leader Jim Dinn (St. John’s Centre) held a cost of living town hall last evening. This event was focused on listening to the individual experiences of those in attendance, and working to find real solutions that will help everyone.
“Town Halls are essential in finding real solutions for any issue facing our province. It is a welcoming space that allows people to share their experiences and perspectives that others may not have thought of,” said Dinn.
Dinn was joined by Jen Crowe (Choices for Youth), Sean Wiltshire (Avalon Employment), and Mohamad Abdallah (Connection for Seniors) who shared their insights based on what they are experiencing within their organizations.
“The one thing that is clear to me from this discussion is we need more investment for community organizations and initiatives. We currently have groups in our province who are doing crucial work that is yielding results,” said Dinn. “Government could learn a lot from what people in our communities are doing to improve the lives of residents. If these groups are already seeing results with their programs, let’s inject more funding to expand these solutions. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
“It all starts with a discussion. When you sit down and listen to people, listen to people working in the community directly, you can find so many levers that can be pulled to instill hope that we will overcome this.”
