NDP MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) is demanding government take immediate action to incentivize housing construction in the province, warning that financial uncertainty caused by U.S. tariffs will only deepen the ongoing housing crisis. He says the Liberal’s so-called “Five-Point Housing Plan” is a spectacular failure as far as the people in his district are concerned.

Today in the House of Assembly, Brown highlighted the urgent need for increased housing starts, particularly in Labrador West, where the lack of available housing has reached a critical level.

“In my district, we are at 0% vacancy,” says Brown. “Workers, families, and seniors are struggling to find a place to live. Businesses are feeling the impact, as workers cannot relocate to Labrador West without housing. This is a crisis that obstructs community growth and economic stability.”

Brown pointed out that despite the overwhelming demand for housing, and despite the fact that housing start numbers are up everywhere else in Canada, this province has seen a decline in housing starts. He warned that this slowdown, combined with rising costs of construction materials due to Canada’s escalating trade war with the U.S., could put homeownership and rental affordability even further out of reach for many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Brown pressed the Minister for immediate solutions, asking, “What is government doing to incentivize housing builds?” He emphasized that without strong policy action, the province risks worsening an already dire housing situation.

Brown says that the Liberal plan is not working and specifically does absolutely nothing to directly help Labradorians who are currently facing eviction so landlords can rent to fly-in fly-out workers at a higher price.

“30 people are on the wait list for NL Housing units in Labrador West. Only 4 new units were announced, and they have yet to be put out to tender,” Brown says. “Labradorians deserve safe and secure housing. Can the Minister highlight what point in the Five-point plan helps Labradorians facing evictions?”
