MHA Jordan Brown (Labrador West) wants to know why the Liberal government will not commit to returning the base for the province’s fifth water bomber to Wabush, but instead hints at Quebec being a key player in Labrador’s forest fire resources.
At last week’s announcement of the Atlantic Wildfire Centre of Excellence, the Premier said there were “some high level discussions with respect to how we share some firefighting resources,” with “an adjacent province in Labrador West.” In a letter to the Premier, Brown questions how government can champion a new endeavor that supposedly makes the province a leader in fire preparedness while continuing to refuse to restore resources in Labrador West, instead relying on Quebec.
“We all know how stressful this summer was for all Labradorians. As I said in the House of Assembly this past Spring, our climate is changing, and the level of dryness in Labrador will not be a single event,” Brown wrote in the letter. “We see the effects of climate change growing, whether it be from Hurricane Fiona, with people still trying to get on their feet, or the evacuation of Labrador City this summer, the largest this province has seen
“As the MHA for Labrador West, as a Labradorian, and as someone who was forced to evacuate this summer, not knowing when my family would be able to go back home, I ask you to clarify your remarks on Quebec providing fire protection services to Labrador West and ask you to return the water bomber base to Wabush for the safety of all Labradorians.”
A copy of the letter is attached.
