Candidate Name

Kathleen Burt is a community activist, volunteer, and former teacher and college instructor whose career spans more than 25 years in the public and private school systems in three provinces.

 

As an educator, Kathleen was actively involved in the executives of various teaching associations and supported continuing education initiatives at her workplaces. Most recently, Kathleen instructed at the College of the North Atlantic and Academy Canada. 

 

Kathleen has been an active member of the NL New Democratic Party for 15 years and has served in a variety of roles. She currently serves as the Membership Secretary.

 

Kathleen has also served on numerous committees and has been active within the Women’s Caucus and at the district association level for many years.

 

As an avid volunteer, Kathleen is passionate about democracy, education, and community development.

The byelection is set for January 24, 2019.

When to Vote

Electors can vote by Special Ballot in person at two locations:

  1. the Topsail-Paradise district Returning Office located at 1429-E Topsail Road, Paradise, and

  2. Elections Newfoundland and Labrador’s head office at 35 Hallett Crescent in St. John’s.

 

These offices are open for Special Ballot voting Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

 

Special Ballot voting is designed to accommodate electors who will be unable to vote in person at the Advance Polls.

The deadline to apply for a Special Ballot is Saturday, January 19 at 6:00pm. Completed Special Ballot Kits must be returned to Elections NL no later than Monday, January 21 at 4:00pm.

Saturday, January 19th, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Time off to Vote

All employees qualified to vote are entitled to have 4 consecutive hours to vote on Election Day. For example, if you normally work 9 - 5:00 p.m., your employer is required to let you leave work 1 hour earlier in order to have 4 consecutive hours to get to the polls.

What You Need to Vote

In order to be eligible to vote in Topsail-Paradise you will need to be

  • a Canadian Citizen

  • at least 18 years of age

  • a resident of the Newfoundland & Labrador

  • a resident of the district

 

An eligible voter may cast a ballot even if they are not yet on the voters list. They will need to swear an oath and produce necessary identification at the polling station, e.g. a drivers licence.
