NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) and Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) attended the official opening of Marguerite’s Place today, and had nothing but praise for the women who were responsible for the opening of the complex.
“It is certainly impressive to see how far the women’s movement has come,” Michael said. “From the early days when we were fighting for recognition that issues even existed to today, when the entire community has come together to help build this impressive new facility, has been a long journey.
“I commend the women of the St. John’s Status of Women’s Council for their hard work, which has culminated in this fine facility.”
Rogers welcomed the new addition to the landscape in St. John’s Centre with enthusiasm. “Congratulations to the Status of Women’s Council for putting Marguerite’s Place together,” she said. “What a great job they did in working so hard to provide supportive, affordable housing for women with complex needs. I was delighted to attend the opening today to see for myself the concrete result of all this work.”
Both Michael and Rogers are long-time supporters of the St. John’s Women’s Centre.
